the Ganges are never affected by any impurity. They remain pure and holy, even after being touched by something unholy. Once an object is consigned to fire, it is reduced to ashes. The sunbeam falls on both holy and unholy. The Ganges water purifies things impure.
in course of this discussion, we wanted our Baba to tell us about the advent of the Ganges to our earth. he said that once in amaravati in the palace of indra, an expert singer (a Gand- harva) was rendering music. The place was full of sages, Gods and Goddesses. On hearing the melodious song of the expert artist, everyone was highly impressed. all except Devarshi Narada were glad. and the musician took note of the fact. Later on, he secretly asked Devarshi Narada as to why he was not satisfied with the song, sung by him at the palace of indra that day.
Devarshi replied, “The song you sang that day was not upto the mark.” surprised, the singer said, “how strange! is it at all possible to sing any song better than what i had sung that day?” Replied Devarshi, “Of course, it is possible. if you had the opportunity of listening to the song of shiva, the God of Gods, you would not have said this.”
The singer took leave of Devarshi Narada and got lost in meditation on Mahadev. satisfied, Mahadev appeared before him. The singer humbly said that he wanted to be fortunate enough to listen to his song. Mahadev said, “You don’t deserve to listen to my song. it is Vishnu who deserves to listen to my song. if he ever wishes to listen to my song, then i can fulfil your prayer.”
The singer then sat in meditation on Vishnu. On being satisfied with him when Vishnu appeared before him, he made a fervent appeal to Vishnu. and the prayer was granted forthwith. On being instructed by Vishnu, a grand programme was arranged at the peak of the sumeru. all the sages, the gods, the goddesses and the gandharvas were invited to that programme. Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwar took their respective seats. On being requested, Mahadev began his song. The song was so melodious that Vishnu melted into water and began flowing down. Mahadev soon took the flow of water within his ‘Kamandalu’ (a pot, generally carried by a sage). But the water flowed over the ‘Kamandalu’ and then
