kāma krodha mada moha tyaja kara bhajana niṣkāma śreṣṭha padārtha bhoga jagatake, aṃte mile sūkhadhāma
The meaning is, having renounced desire, anger, ego and attach- ment, be devoted to singing songs in praise of God. it will fetch the richest gain on earth and in the long run you will attain eternity.
some other day, Baba told us a story about King shatrujit. he was not only bold but a great emperor. Every princely King near his Kingdom was brought under his sway. For that reason, he was held in high esteem as ‘shatrujit’. he was addressed as ‘shatrujit’ though his mother did not address him by that name. angry at that he asked his mother, “Dear mother, why don’t you address me as ‘shatrujit’?”
Replied the mother, “Dear boy, one who has only trounced or defeated the enemies outside cannot really be a shatrujit. One who is able to put an end to all the enemies within his heart is indeed a ‘shatrujit’.
after having told this story, our Baba quoted srimat shan- karacharya:
शेते सुखं कस्ु समालधनिष्ठधो। जागततजि कधो वा सदसद् तववेकी॥ के शत्रवः सन्न् निजेंद्द्यार्ण। कान्ेव समत्रार्ण र्जतानि यानि॥
śete sukhaṃ kastu samādhiniṣṭho, jāgarti ko vā sadasad vivekī. ke śatravaḥ santi nijeṃdriyāṇi, kānyeva mitrāṇi jitāni yāni.
(Maniratnama)
That is to say—
Who can have a peaceful sleep? a devoted one.
Who is awake? One who knows both good and bad.
Who are enemies? One’s own senses.
They are friends too when they remain under control.
Baba then said, “Just as an untrained and untamed horse is a
threat to a rider, the same horse, if duly trained and tamed, proves to be his greatest friend.”
