There was thus an altercation between them and it worsened into fisticuffs. On hearing the noise, his neighbour rushed to his place and took the side of the merchant and joined the scuffle. The noise and shouting could be heard from afar. On waking from their sleep, the other people living in the vicinity rushed to the house of the merchant. They thought that the merchant might have been attacked by the dacoits. But on reaching there, they came to know about the matter. some of them took the merchant’s side and some others stood against him. On leaving their houses, everyone came to the courtyard of the merchant where they fought against each other. as a result of such a melee, the security of the town got roused from his sleep. he, in company with his guards, came to the scene of action, and shortly he was followed by half of the people of the town.
On the arrival of the security of the town, the melee got qui- etened. he wanted to know what the problem was. The merchant said, “i came to learn from my attendant that my wife would kill me tonight, and so i lay on my bed, feigning sleep. and when she was about to attack me, i caught her red-handed.”
The merchant made his point clear, so did his brother and his neighbours. Everybody referred to the servant. Then the attendant was brought in. and he exposed everything, and admitted his guilt. he then added, “it is time to ask the merchant regarding the conditions i was appointed by him.” The businessman having forgotten all about it, the attendant reminded him of that. he then defended, “Before i took up the job, i made a condition that i would tell lies twice a year. The merchant had agreed to my condition. it is now better to ask the merchant in this regard.” and the merchant admitted the fact.
On having told the story, Baba said, “Little do people think about the repercussion of telling lies. so the habit of telling lies must be totally discarded.”
