to listen to the tales, told by him. One day he recited,
करुणा, मैत्री, मुददता, औि उपेक्षा ज्ञाि चाि बहहि, हय जीवकी, सदा किे मलहाि
karuṇā, maitrī, muditā, aur upekṣā jñāna cāra bahina, haya jīvakī, sadā kare malahāna
That means compassion, amicability, joy in the success of others and non attachment—these four things are like the four sisters of a man. (They are devoted to doing good to human beings.) Once a man is in company of these four things, his impurities get cleansed. This is the most effective means to kill attachment. Baba also recited another Doha:
जाग जाग िि जाग तुं, तव ि स्वप् कधो संग, शुद् सिाति रूपमे, चढे ि दूजधो िंग; जैसे निद्ा दधोषकि, स्वप् पुरुष बहु भाि, भधोक्ा भधोग्ाकाि सधो जागे द्ैत ि शाि।
jāga jāga nara jāga tuṃ, tava na svapna ko saṃga, śuddha sanātana rūpame, caḍhe na dūjo raṃga; jaise nidrā doṣakara, svapna puruṣa bahu bhāna, bhoktā bhogyākāra so jāge dvaita na śāna.
That means, Oh human being, awake, do not be duped by illusion. God is pure and perennial, he is but One. That is to say, dear men, be free from illusion, awake from your illusion. What you see around is but an illusion. Just as a man dreams many a dream, the feeling of both consumer and consumed is false. For example, after you wake up, the dream you had dreamt seems to be false. That means, once you become wise you will be free from this sense of duality. When a man really awakes from the grip of illusion, he verily realizes that Chaitanya is one and it pervades everywhere.
Do not drift but remain calm, O mind!
how long will you be in the state of illusion?
Who are you? Why did you come? Did you forget yourself? Open your eyes, leaving behind your bad dreams;
Be not engrossed in things transient.
