valuable things and articles. Once you have a look at them, you will lose interest in petty things.”
While recounting the story about the conversation of two thieves, i am reminded of what Baba once said: “One who eats Rasgulla (sweet) daily does not hanker after molasses.” That means, one who has had the grace of God will consider all earthly things as trash and tasteless.
anyway, the second thief agreed to the proposal of the first thief and went with him to the Palace. On reaching the Palace, both of them tactfully entered it. On heading towards a chamber, they saw coins, kept piled at a certain place. seeing it, the second thief sat down and laid a piece of cloth to collect them. The first thief then said to the second one, “Fie! is it at all worth taking? it’s nothing but a copper-coin. Get up please and let’s proceed forward.” after a few steps ahead, a pile of wads of currency was seen. Glad at the sight, the second one was eager to pick them up. seeing it, the first one said to the other, “They are but silver coins and do not kill your time by picking them up. Get up and follow me and you will get more beautiful things.” The second one restrained himself at the words of the first one and went forward. a few steps thereafter, a pile of Mohur was seen. The second one, failing to check his temptation, sat down with a piece of cloth laid on the ground to collect them. That those things were still insignificant and that there were things more precious than the Mohur seemed to fall on deaf ears of the second thief and he disagreed to move further. Finding no other alternative, the first thief left the second one there and he himself pressed forward to the inner apartment of the Palace. On entering the bedroom of the King, he stole the necklace of the King, put it in his pocket and made away with it.
soon it was reported that a man of evil design had entered the Palace and all the guards stood alert. as the head of the sentinels beat the Bheri (big drum used in warfare) all the sentinels rushed to him. he ordered the qualified ones, “Catch the miscreant now.” immediately the sentinels ran in search of the miscreant, and a man with a heavy load of gold coins was arrested. They beat him black and blue and brought him hand cuffed before the King.
