jewel to the friend of his father. On getting the jewel, the man realized that it was a fake one. he understood why his belated friend asked his son to come to him with a fake jewel. he then said to the boy, “Keep this jewel safe at your house. Now you learn lessons of jewellery with me. as for your expenses, you need not worry. i promise to shoulder the responsibility.”
The young man acquired the skill of jewellery under the direct supervision of the jeweller, who said to him, “Now you bring back the jewel offered by your father.” The son on his part did it and when he was asked to determine its value, he was surprised to see that the jewel was a fake one. The jeweller then said, “Your father wished you to acquire education i.e. knowledge. if i had told you that the jewel was a fake diamond, you could have thought that i was cheating you. i have taught you the lesson to distinguish the good from the bad. Now you yourself have been able to identify that it is indeed a fake one.”
On having told this tale, Baba said, “if you learn lessons under the tutelage of a sat-Guru (i.e. ideal teacher), remain devoted to it and be in contact with ‘sat-sanga’ (i.e. good association), you yourself will be able to identify which one is temporary and which one permanent. You will then really realize that getting attached to things temporary is as good as getting tempted to a fake pearl. [This piece of advice was made by Baba to sri Taraprasanna Babu in 1335 Bangabda (1928 aD)].
in the evening, i asked Baba for the meaning of ‘danti’. Baba said, “Danti means ‘sam-dam’ i.e. penance of body and mind. Only in touch with things material, the mind becomes dull and restless. By means of penance of body and mind the mind becomes pure, fine and quiet. it is in this state of mind that one realizes ‘Brahma’. ‘sam’ means control of mind, while ‘dam’ means mortification of senses. With the help of one, the other one is attained.
Baba narrated to us a story about a pious young man, honest to his promise. The young man got married during his boyhood. he had not seen his wife after his marriage because his wife, since marriage, had been staying with her parents. When he felt that an extra one was needed to help run the family, he went to his
