parents-in-law’s house to accompany his wife home. On entering the village, he saw a young girl by the side of a pond, who was at a loss with a couple of pitchers, full to their brim. she would have to take both the pitchers, one above the other, but she failed to place the second one atop the first. On seeing the young man coming she asked, “Could you please place this pitcher atop the one on my head?”
The young man agreed to help her. The young girl then said, “You are to promise that you will always behave with me like my brother.”
The young man promised so and carefully placed the pitcher on top of the first one. Both of them left for their respective destinations. On the way, the young man enquired about the location of the house of his parents-in-law and on arrival he was cordially received. at night when both the young man and the young girl met each other, they were taken aback. The young man remembered that he placed a pitcher on the head of a young girl on promise that he would always regard her as his sister.
The next day, they took leave of their parents. The young man then accompanied his wife to his home and said, “Be thou the head of the family. Expect nothing more than this. You are as good as my sister and under no circumstances can i take the food, prepared by you.”
Both of them distanced themselves from each other, but none other could follow it. Besides, they did not let anyone know about it. This is how they spent their days in joy and woe. The wife could feel well that her pious husband would not budge an inch to deviate from his pledge. so there was no question of any progeny whatsoever. and if there was no progeny, the family would get ruined and the house would lose its beauty. so she thought to get her husband married. she also thought that it would be better if one of her sisters, a verily nubile one, was married to her husband. she had the consent of her husband and sent a word to her father. The father came to learn that his daughter was enjoying a happy-go-lucky life in her husband’s place and that she had nothing more to want. On getting the proposal, the father made an
