to the proposal, it would amount to a breach of promise. Both the mistakes are equally grievous. Under no circumstances will i budge an inch from the promise made. What should i do now? if i commit suicide, then i will be absolved of these sins. so it would be better to commit suicide.”
so decided, he took out a sword, committed suicide and thus solved the problem.
When the first wife saw that her husband, who had gone upstairs had not returned for a long time went up to check on him. On reaching there, she saw her husband lying in a pool of blood. she too failing to stand the death of her husband committed suicide. The second wife went upstairs in order to know why her elder sister had not come down. When she saw that both her husband and her elder sister had committed suicide, she followed suit.
When sri Krishna, the all-knower, saw that all three had not come down he suggested to arjun, “let us go upstairs to see what has happened.”
On reaching upstairs, they saw all the three members of the family lying dead in a pool of blood. Taken aback, arjun said, “O God, it is a game played by you!”
sri Krishna then narrated the whole story to arjun and added, “This man, in order not to violate the promise, took to self-im- molation. Little did he hesitate to commit suicide lest he should break the promise.”
God, the Benignant, sprinkled water on all the three dead bodies and thus revived, all of them stood up. sri Krishna then said to them, “You have now a new life. Forget all about the promise made in your previous life. i am here to get you married and thereafter you lead the life of a husband and wives.”
sri Krishna offered both the women to the young man as wives and said, “Let us go downstairs and have our food.”
The young master of the family felt curious to know about that great sage. arjun could understand it and so he at the time of departure said, “The King of Tribhuvan has condescended to enjoy your hospitality today. Who is more lucky than you today? sri Krishna has graced you because you were true to your promise.
