it was too impossible for the businessman to sustain the weight of the three humans. his tired hand automatically let go off the coconuts and all the three fell down into the well.
having thus told the tale, Baba recited a Doha:
अतत लधोभ िव द्कजीए, अतत लधोभ दुःखददि; एक िारियल के वास्े, गीिे कूपमें तति।
ati lobha nava kijīe, ati lobha duḥkhadina; eka nāriyalake vāste, gīre kūpameṃ tina.
in course of the discussion on inordinate temptation, Baba told us another tale to let us know about the dire consequence of too much of greed :
a big merchant was married to the daughter of a small busi- nessman. Within a very short period, both of them got involved in a marital discord. The daughter of the businessman decided to commit suicide to put an end to her agonized life. With that object in view, one day she stole out of her house at midday. When she was passing through a forest, she was followed by a (mridangi) percussionist. he could soon realize that the woman was all alone, with none to take care of her. he therefore boldly said to her, “Where are you going with so much of ornaments on?”
“i have come to the forest to commit suicide,” said the woman. and it made the percussionist happy. he was in fact tempted to have all the ornaments. and his purpose would be served when the woman would commit suicide. The daughter of the businessman (i.e. the woman) stood by the side of a well. at that time the man said to her, “since you are going to commit suicide, leave aside all your ornaments.”
soon after, the woman took off all her ornaments and tied them in a piece of cloth. she offered all her ornaments to the percussionist except the nose ring. and when the man wanted to have it, she said, “how can i part with it since i am a married woman? The moment i will be no more, pull out my corpse and take it off from my nose.”
The percussionist thought that it would pose a problem on his
