Gurumukh was a simple-hearted man. he took the words of his friend in the right spirit and got down with one end of his turban. The treacherous other allowed his friend to get down into the well but did not pull him out of it. he left the other end of the turban and left the place.
Close to the well, there grew a aswastha (Peepul) tree. its roots went deep into the well. Gurumukh held the roots of that tree tight and spent a sleepless night there.
a ghost and a snake also lived there—one on a branch and the other at its trunk. Both of them were on good terms. at midnight the ghost said to his friend, snake, “You see, my friend, the daughter of the King of the land is possessed by me. Neither a doctor or a quack nor an exorcist could do anything for that girl. There is but one ‘mantra’. if it is recited, i will have no other option but to leave her free.”
The snake asked, “What is that ‘Mantra’, dear friend?” The ghost uttered that ‘Mantra’. The snake then said, “Look there is a stack of bricks. a huge amount of treasure is kept buried therein. i am the custodian of that treasure-trove. so long i am there, none will dare touch it.”
The ghost enquired, “What to do then to keep you off, my pal?” Replied the snake, “There is a Mantra. if any one, while standing there, utters it, then i must leave that treasure-trove”. The snake was then asked about that particular Mantra’.
Gurumukh listened to what both the ghost and the snake had talked between themselves and waited for the day to dawn. at the break of day, people began walking along that way. Gurumukh then shouted for help. a few passersby could hear the cry for help and rushed to the well and before long they rescued Gurumukh.
Gurumukh then had his clothes dried in the sun and headed toward the palace. he introduced himself to be an exorcist and dared to save the daughter of the king from the possession of the ghost. The king then said “Dear, you are a young man. i know nothing about your expertise in medical sciences. if you can cure my daughter, then i will get her married to you. i have no other heir and so in near future you would be the king of this land. But
