Gurumukh agreed. The princess on being treated by him came around overnight. The king, satisfied as he was with Gurumukh, got his daughter wedded to him with all pomp. The king then had a palatial building erected for the son-in-law to live in. and Gurumukh happily began living there with his wife.
as days were rolling by with all familial bliss and happiness, Manomukh came to his house. Manomukh came to learn that his friend Gurumukh had become the son-in-law of the king. he came to the house of Gurumukh with a view to getting something from him. simple-hearted Gurumukh forgot all about the treachery of his friend and received him with all cordiality. he entertained his friend for a few days and bade farewell to him, having offered him a good many gifts. Manomukh got a lot of things—something he could hardly expect. But his was a bad habit and he could hardly get over it. he announced in the capital that Gurumukh, the son-in-law of the king, was a sweeper (a ‘bhangi’).
Within a short while, the king came to know all about it. he used to have his meal in company with his son-in-law but since then he arranged for a separate place for the son-in-law to take his meals. he thought to himself that he had not done right by having his daughter married to one about whose pedigree he knew nothing. But little did he think that such a pious and gallant young man could be born in a lower family.
anyway, Gurumukh took due note of the change in the behav- iour of the King, but he could find no reason for such a change of attitude. he had a discussion with his wife, the princess, but could not ascertain the reason whatsoever. But such an irony of fate did not remain concealed for a long time. he came to learn from one of his attendants that Manomukh, in the garb of a friend, wreaked the havoc. he felt really very shocked. The only question that came uppermost to his mind was why Manomukh, despite knowing the fact that Gurumukh came of a cultured family, spoke ill of him by way of treachery. Gurumukh lost no time to see the King. The King, although annoyed at his son-in-law, could not but listen to
