what the latter had told him. Gurumukh, said to the King, “Your Majesty, you have been angry with me for no reason at all. To you i am one whose familial heritage is unknown, but i am no less than any other as far as my heritage is concerned. a huge amount of wealth of my forebears is still kept buried underground. i have every doubt if your treasury had that much. i could have formed a little state with that amount of riches and property, but i am now under your affectionate bond. Believe me, i come of a very good family.”
The King became happy with Gurumukh. But to drown his doubts, he rode on horseback and went to that vast stretch of land, in company with Gurumukh and his men. he could have a view of a palatial building in ruins. On reaching there, the King asked Gurumukh, “Where are the jewels and riches kept buried underground?”
But Gurumukh did not know the exact location of that treas- ure-trove. he only thought to himself that it was probably there where there was a snake. he then said, “i do not know the exact place. We have been hearing all about it down the generations. and i believe that i would be able to locate that place.”
While they were roaming in the ruins, they could see a huge snake, which with its hood raised was about to attack them. The king got frightened and went back. But Gurumukh, without receding, recited the ‘Mantra’. The snake lowered its hood in a second and slithered away in no time.
Excavations started exactly where the snake was. Deep down, the door of a big hall was noticed. as the door was broken open, it was seen that there were heaps of riches on its floor. Gladdened at heart, the King embraced his son-in-law. Within a few days, all the riches were brought to the treasury of the King. all the riches were kept reserved for his daughter and his son-in-law. Thence forward, the King led a very long life happily with them. in course of time, when the King breathed his last, Gurumukh ascended the throne.
