The sage cast a look at him and said, “Koi kangal ko de do” (“कोई कंगाल को दे दो”). With these words, he began eating the left-over. The accountant, on returning to the palace, relayed everything to the King. The King then began thinking, “The sage is of supreme quality and that it is no mean a virtue to check the temptation of Rs. 1000/-. Now i myself will go to him with Rs. 10000/-.” On being ordered by the King, the accountant brought the King Rs. 10000-. But the sage turned a blind eye to the King standing before him and began eating slowly. With a bow of respect to the sage, the King said, “Revered sadhuji, i have brought with me Rs. 10,000/-. Please accept it and if you need more, i am ready to pay that amount.” Neither did the sage take notice of the King, nor said any word. But as the King insisted to the sage to accept the money, the sage said listlessly, “Koi kangal ko de do” (“कोई कंगाल को दे दो”).
The King retorted, “You yourself are a ‘kangal’. There is not one as ‘kangal’ as you in my land.”
sadhu: Do you take me to be a ‘kangal’?
King: Certainly, otherwise why would you feed on the left-over? sadhu: i think, you are the King of the land?
King: Yes, i am.
sadhu: if i pay you a few lakhs of rupees, would you take it? King: i am ready to take. Please pay me that amount of money. sadhu: if i pay that amount of money and jewellery you have
in your treasury, will you take it?
The King felt happy to hear this, paid his pranam to the sage
and said, “if you favour me with the amount you have promised, then i will remain grateful to you.”
With a smile, the avadhootji said, “Do you understand who the actual ‘kangal’ is? You have an enormous amount of riches with you. Nevertheless, you are in want of something more. in fact, one in want of something is a ‘kangal’. and one who is above every kind of desire or want is a King indeed. Be content with what you have. shun your feeling of want or desires and then and then only will you be the King.”
saying this, the sage left the place.
