was no other to disturb their bliss and happiness of conjugal life. Once at daybreak, at the confluence of day and night an oracle was heard. The family of the monkeys heard that one who would have a bath in the river at this point of time would be transformed into a divine being. No sooner had they heard the oracle than they felt tempted to have a bath in the river. On getting up from the river, they really saw themselves metamorphosed into divine beings. Very glad at heart, they began roaming in the forest. at dusk, they heard another oracle. The oracle said that one who would have a bath in the river at this point of time would either be transformed into gods or beasts. The he monkey in human form got tempted to have a bath in the river. The she-monkey prevented him from doing so by saying: “Now that we have divine human forms, it is no use running for the newer form and let us be happy with what we have now. if we yearn for the uncertain, leaving aside the certain, then we may have to leave the certain. We must remain contented with this human form. if we get tempted, we may be
converted into a beast.
The he-monkey paid no heed to the words of his wife. They got
tempted at the thought of a rosy future and went to have a bath in the river. Bath over, they saw themselves converted into beasts. On having told this tale, the Queen said to the King, “Your Majesty, you are intelligent enough, so think twice. in search of an uncertain future, you are ready to cast off this life of luxury. in the long run, you may lose both the certain and the uncertain.” The King said, “i will opt for things uncertain. if i fail, i will be ready to give up my life. My dear Queen, this determination
is my essence and life. Now i have a tale to tell you:
You might have heard the name of akbar, the Emperor. he had a council of nine wise ministers. just like King Vikramaditya. Birbal was the most intelligent of all the ministers of the Emperor. and he was in the good book of the Emperor. But no Mohammedan minister could stand the partiality of the Emperor towards Birbal. One day all the ministers met the Emperor in and said to him, “Why should a hindu minister be favoured over the Mohammedan ones? are we far inferior to the hindus in respect of intelligence?
