seat reserved for him. he then invited all other esteemed guests to have their seats. Thereafter he took his seat. On the carpet below sat a few Brahmacharins and the pundits of the ashrama. The male disciples sat on the verandah to the north, while the female disciples sat on the other side. Thereafter our Guru Maharaj in order to initiate a holy discussion asked one or two questions to shri shri hans Maharajji. The Brahmacharins, two pundits and respected srijukta Pranagopal Mukhopadhyay (who is a ‘sadhak’ of higher order) took part in the discussion. The first question was—“is the gyani (ज्ानी) fore-ordained (‘Prarabdha’) and is the gyani at all mentally distracted and disturbed?”
The sadhu-Baba said, “Yes, the gyani may be said to be pre-des- tined. But how? it is something like the wheel of an artisan which, if it is forced to spin fast, goes on spinning at the same speed.” Baba also added, “The gyani belongs to two classes. The one is ‘Bidehamukta’ (free from the body) and the other is ‘Jivanmukta’ (free from life). The ‘Bidehamukta’ is in a class by himself. But the one in the form of a human body—the one who has an air of authority and lives on eating is sure to be distracted. The reason is not far to seek. ice, for example, feels cold and fire feels hot. similarly, it is in the human mind there are feelings or emotions like religiosity as well as irreligiosity, patience and impatience, shame as well as fear, anger as well as enviousness, joy and sorrow, authority and luxury. But one who is really a ‘gyani’ sees through his mind. he remains detached from all these emotions of the human mind and has a restraint over his desires. The gyani never attaches any importance to the emotive feelings. a real gyani, being totally detached from all kinds of desires has no emotions like authority and luxury. he is in reality a born ‘Jivanmukta Purush’ who having suppressed every emotion of his mind has become free from his mental distortion.” Baba then recited—
