Fifth Taranga
One day as we reached our Baba at the Kailash, our discussion centred round a fake sannyasin. said he, there’s nothing wrong in one’s pretending to pray to God. But a sinner is he who doesn’t pray within and without. Even if one is a fake, if he keeps on praying, he is sure to be a sage. To make us understand this truth, he narrated an anecdote to us.
a King wished to visit a sage. But because of his senility, it was really impossible for him to search for a sage in the forests, hills and mountains. he, therefore, ordered his minister, “Find out a genuine sage and i will visit him. You have only six months at your disposal to do so. if you can help me visit a sage, you’ll be rewarded or you’ll be tried.”
The minister was in problem as to where to find out a sage. he found no sage in the neighbourhood. Besides, a sage can’t be purchased. so he made a plan. One of the stable-keepers of the King was a handsome looking man. That man was intelligent too. in order to make him look like a sage, the minister took him outside the city and raised a hut in wood for him. Thereafter, the minister told him all about the plan. said he, “You’re to pretend like a sage to attract the mind of the King. i’m giving you the mantras, teaching you about how to sit in meditation, showing you how to wear a sage-like look, but you are to remain speechless, otherwise you would be exposed.” The syce at first declined to do so, but agreed because he was greedy for money. The minister assured him, “You will have a huge amount of money by way of dakshina of which one half would be yours.” During his spare time the minister began teaching him daily the lessons intended and in the process a few months passed by.
after a passage of six months, the King enquired of his minister on the scheduled day, “have you been able to find out a sage?”
Replied he, “Your highness, i’ve definitely found out one who is really a genuine sage. he had been in meditation in a cave in
