we were the old-timers. But our mind was all but old. This was because our mind was undergoing changes in the holy company of our Baba. May be, by the grace of our Guru we thought that there would be nothing of the old.
That day our Baba sat on a deer-skin atop a higher seat. and we all sat at his feet. a few words on things ordinary being over, Baba on a query said, “This human body is but an apartment, of which the King is darkness. sound, touch, beauty, taste and smell are the courtiers of the King. intelligence is but a dancer and the five senses are but accompanists. The Atman, being a lighted lamp, is present there, but it is detached from the musical soiree and hence it is one and alone. Just as the space, despite being all-encompassing, is detached from every object, our Atman too is detached or free from both deeds, good or bad.
Baba also said, “in a drama, enacted on a stage, one is in the role of the King, the others are in the roles of queen, attendant and sweeper, but there is neither loss nor gain because everyone knows that they are but performers for a certain period of time. Just like an actor, one has to do his duty perfectly well. i am not what i am playing now. i am addressed by a name for the sake of advantage. This body has its name but i am not my body. i am Sat, Chit, Ananda. My body is subject to death and decay, but i am not. i am imperishable and undying.
Baba then recited a poem—
