life of renunciation, has been able enough to bear my food-stuff. This is what made me laugh”.
having narrated the story, our Baba said, one can reduce his desires in this way. and one can raise his desires too. To drive home his point into our heart, he told us another tale. a poor man thought that when he had one thousand coins, he could devote himself to meditating on God unconcerned. and by God’s grace he got a thousand coins. soon after, he begged for ten thousand more and once his prayer was granted, he prayed for one lac, thereafter he reached the state of being a Zamindar and thereafter the King of a country. and God granted all his prayers. But even after having won a country, he begged for being a god and then being the King of heaven. That too was granted, but his desires grew from more to more. he begged for being Brahma. angered, God said, “Be thou converted into what thou wast.” and soon after, he was converted to what he was earlier.

On having told the tale, our Baba made us realize, peace of mind can only be won by means of practice of satisfaction. There is no end to a man’s desires. so there is the least possibility of the fulfilment of his desires. attachment ends in sorrow because it entails many a binding. attachment indeed ties the humans to things material and earthly. Until he develops detachment, he can in no way be free from it. One who is detached has a peace of mind. he is detached from all the bindings and hence free. Peace is the outcome of a feeling of freedom and the outcome of attachment is the just the opposite.
